Abilene is the county seat of Taylor County,
located in central Texas, approximately 180 miles west of Dallas
and 230 miles northwest of Austin.
The city is 121 1/2 square miles in size
and sits 1,708 feet above sea level on mostly flat terrain.
Founded in 1891 as a cattle-shipping point
on the Texas and Pacific Railway, Abilene has evolved from a western
prairie town, rich in oil by the 1950s, to a major medical and agricultural
center for the area today. It is home to Dyess Airforce Base, Abilene's
single largest employer and economic influencer, and maintains a
stable and diversified economy. Government, healthcare and education
- in addition to oil and gas, and emergent new energy industries,
such as wind power - will remain economic growth drivers of the
Abilene economy.
Low unemployment rates and labor costs,
along with below-average costs of living and costs of doing business
- all make Abilene an attractive destination. Outlook Magazine ranked
the city among the country's top five eligible cities for business,
while Forbes magazine ranked Abilene 58 out of 179 small metropolitan
areas for business and careers.
